The word laser is actually an acronym for Light Amplification by Stimulated Emmission of Radiation. The laser beam in and of itself is not hot, it is just a beam of light concentrated down to a point that is less than a fraction of a millimeter. When the focused light contacts matter, like leather, the light's energy is turned into heat. Laser beams have been used to etch the hardest natural substance known on earth, a diamond and are progressively being used in the medical field. It is quite amazing technology.
If you would like a custom logo for your blacksmith apron, just submit a high quality digital image to us. We review it to ensure it is printable then we forward it on to Esplin Digital, our laser company who makes the final judgement call. The image is then run it through a program on their computer that translates the peremiters of the image, the depth of the burn, and the speed to the laser machine which allows for a three dimensional affect.
Since the burn is a mono-tone, brown char of the leather, much like a brand would be, we find that what produces the best contrast is to use light-colored, veg-tan cured leather. When we receive your finished logo pocket back from the laser company, we coat it with a leather sealant to help protect the leather from staining and retain the burn. Though the veg-tan leather starts out light colored, over time it will age and develop a golden hue or patina. Of course, some folks find the bright logo patch adverse so we also offer to burn their logo into the same leather the apron is made of. This provides a more subtle look while still providing personalization to the leather apon.
